New London County has a high percentage of children seen in emergency departments due to injuries they receive from animal bites. While some of these injuries are minor, many of them can be serious and thus devastating for children and their families. Concurrently with the review of data, our coalition was made aware of a local child who was viciously attacked by a dog and suffered severe injuries, providing for us a catalyst for action in this issue.
Armed with data and a group of determined community members, our coalition began discussions on how to prevent animal bite injuries to children in our communities. Specifically we have learned that early education to dog owners and children, communication between stakeholders, and a coordinated effort are needed in order to ensure a successful animal bite prevention program.
